A Connecticut man was tased after resisting arrest following a domestic disturbance in Bolton on Tuesday where he is accused of assaulting two people, including an elderly person.
Troopers from Troop K in Colchester were dispatched to a residence in Bolton just after 9 p.m. for a reported domestic disturbance, according to the Connecticut State Police.
One of the alleged victims had met troopers outside of the residence and alleged that a man identified as 35-year-old Ryan Tomel of South Windsor was intoxicated and had assaulted them and another family member in the home, state police said.
The alleged victim said that they managed to escape from the home and hid in the woods until troopers arrived. They claimed that Tomel returned to the home earlier in the evening while intoxicated and allegedly “began closed-fist striking them in the head and upper body, as well as kicking their lower body area,” according to state police.
The person reported that as they fell behind a couch in an attempt to escape, Tomel placed them in a headlock, making it difficult to breathe. The person also claimed that Tomel verbally threatened to shoot them and the second alleged victim, before he turned his attention to the second alleged victim, who is elderly, state police said.
Troopers were also told that Tomel allegedly began closed-fist striking the elderly individual and later used a cane to strike them, which caused the cane to bend, according to state police. The troopers also learned that there is an active protective order in place between the alleged victims and Tomel, state police said.
Troopers at the scene gave verbal commands for Tomel to come out of the residence. He initially complied and came outside, according to state police, but refused to cooperate with additional commands.
Tomel was told he would be tased if he refused to cooperate, state police said. Troopers deployed a Taser, which was unsuccessful. Tomel went back into the residence and re-emerged a short time later. He was given further commands, refused to comply and was tased a second time, according to state police.
Tomel was placed under arrest and transported to an area hospital following the Taser deployment, state police said.
Troopers later met with the elderly individual at the residence and observed fresh marks on their face. Both alleged victims declined medical treatment.
After Tomel was discharged from the hospital he was taken to Troop K where he was processed and charged with interfering with an officer/resisting, second-degree breach of peace, disorderly conduct, violation of a protective order, third-degree assault, third-degree assault of an elderly victim, second-degree threatening, three-degree strangulation/suffocation and second-degree unlawful restraint.
Tomel was held on a $200,000 bond and was scheduled to appear at Rockville Superior Court on Wednesday.
