BOZEMAN, Mont. – The City of Bozeman is inviting residents to share their thoughts on the Affordable Housing Ordinance this November.
An open house is scheduled for Thursday, November 21 at Fire Station 3, located at 1705 Vaquero Pkwy, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Additionally, a survey is available online for those unable to attend in person.
David Fine, the Housing & Urban Renewal Manager, emphasized the importance of community involvement. "We hope everyone can make it out to the open house or share their thoughts about this project online," he said. "There are many improvements that we’re looking at as we revisit this ordinance, and we’re eager to hear from the public on what they think, and which options are best."
The Affordable Housing Ordinance was adopted by the City Commission in September 2022. This move came in response to the 2021 Montana Legislature's House Bill 259, which restricted the city from mandating affordable housing in new developments. With many traditional tools for affordable housing creation prohibited in Montana, Bozeman turned to voluntary incentives, resulting in nearly 1,500 affordable units, many of which are currently under construction or in planning stages.
In the summer of 2024, the City Commission decided to revisit the ordinance due to growing public interest. Staff were tasked with proposing revisions in three areas: administrative changes for clarity, enhancements to incentivize voluntary affordable housing creation, and adjustments to incentives based on market conditions and public feedback.
After gathering input from the open house and survey, city staff will consult with City Boards, incorporate feedback, and present updates to the Commission. Public comment is encouraged throughout the process.
